Cité du design and modern art museum
Set in the former arms factory, the Cité du design hosts the International Design Biennial every two years. People come for an exhibition, a walk around the Platine or a coffee on a terrace. In the north, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art holds one of the richest public collections in France: Monory, Buren, Pollock. Two visits that make you want to talk long afterwards.
Mining memory at the Couriot pit
At the Couriot pit, the Museum of the Mine takes you down into the galleries and movingly recounts the daily life of the Saint-Étienne miners. Headframe, lamp room, hanging room: a place that makes the city much more tangible. Just next door, the Couriot park offers a wide green space to continue the conversation. An original, very local date.
Jean-Jaurès and Firminy-Vert
Place Jean-Jaurès, a large tree-lined square in the heart of Saint-Étienne, hosts terraces and flea markets. A few minutes away, Firminy gathers the largest Le Corbusier architectural complex in Europe: Saint-Pierre Church, House of Culture and the stadium. On Lyad, members from the Loire share their favourite walks; it is up to you to find someone to push open a designed door with.
